BFB University: How to Count

Only a hat trick away from 100 goals, the headline screamed. That made me pause for a moment and think. You see, that headline, talking about Cristiano Ronaldo, appeared this morning on Marca and then again in the build up to today’s Real Madrid match with Leicester. My mind did one of those little things where it gets confused momentarily because of the audaciousness of a claim–wait, is this a competitive match? In July? Against a team that finished 10th in the Championship last year?

Oh, they meant goals in all matches including friendlies. Yeah that’s crap.

Here’s the thing: CRwhatever# has score a lot of goals for Real Madrid. 86 of them, in fact. In 2 years. That is incredible! That’s fairly mind-boggling, in fact. Only one person in the world has scored more than that in the same amount of time. So why, exactly, is Marca so desperate to say “100 goals! We win! Mission Accomplished? I’m sure CR would wear the crotch-enhancing flight suit as well, though I think Mourinho might want that honor. Is it because that one person who has scored more than him–Lionel Messi–has actually scored 100 goals over the last 2 years? Is it some desperate attempt to convince the world that spending nearly a hundred million euros was worth it?

In reference to Romario and quoted by the BBC in an article about goal tallies, Tostao put it pretty well: “Whether he scored 900, 950 or 1000, that does not diminish the genius of Romario, one of the greatest players of all time.” What does diminish the genius of a player–such as Romario, such as Cristiano Ronaldo–is making obviously idiotic statements and trumpeting them. Marca has done a disservice to a player who had a fabulous season (53 goals!) last year by making up a stat.

86 goals in 2 years. Or 97 if you count friendlies and preseason games. And maybe 390 if you count practice. And maybe more if you count his teammates goals as his. Or you can give him his due for 86 goals in 2 years holy crap.

And doesn’t that just make you swoon all the more over Messi? I don’t even know if I’ve scored as many goals in FIFA in that time.*

Remember, Barça takes on ManU later today on ESPN here in the US. 7pm kickoff in Washington DC. Or actually Landover, Maryland, but whatever, it’s DC.

*I have. But some of them were in friendlies.

  1. “Never has one man scored so many goals for so few trophies.”
-Winston Churchill on Ronaldo’s goal tally (I may be paraphrasing)

Anyhow, Marca is absurd, there’s nothing really new 😛

    1. C’mon man. You’re hurting my feelings. Ronaldo (original) used to be the same until he joined Madrid. Before that he never won a title, only a few cups.

    2. What I meant to say is that, Ronaldo, one of my favorite players ever, also didn’t win a lot of trophies but scored a lot of goals. So I don’t really complain about the article because R9 was on the same boat 🙁

  2. Good news. CONCACAF gets to play against Asia, not South America, for the final spot in the playoffs 😀

  3. Get a life.

Marca is a newspaper, they have to sell copies.

They will never tell it how it is unless it sells.

They are not Catalan & they will probably never tell it how you want to hear it.

If you don’t like it, make your choice, don’t read it.

      This quote makes me sad.
