– Net missing before Madrid’s final training session
– Real Madrid director Jorge Valdano accuses Barca of picking on team

Reuters, Tuesday 19 April 2011 18.30 GMT

An inexplicable loss of nets in the Mestalla stadium in Valencia has fierce rivals Real Madrid, who FC Barcelona take on in the much anticipated Copa del Rey final tomorrow, claiming a conspiracy and a form of mind games by Barcelona ahead of the match.

The nets were seen missing from goal-nets and groundsmen could not find more nets to replace them with. FC Barcelona, who were training just hours before the nets went missing, refused to comment.

Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano believes foul play has occurred. He told radio station Cadena Ser: “I once said every team that is good to the ball, is good to the public. It’s still true, but Barcelona have not been good to the public. [Because] we are Real Madrid and we are the richest club in the world. Everyone loves us and we deserve more respect – we’ve earned it.”

He also claims other teams would be treated differently. “I think it’s pretty sh*tty of them to do that to us. So sh*tty that they could even put it on a stick and take it all the way to Liverpool. In fact, if Liverpool[FC] ever came back to Barcelona, as unlikely as that is seeing their position in the table nowadays, I bet this wouldn’t happen to them, and they even won there before! As a matter of fact, I believe this sort of thing would not happen to any other team.”

Meanwhile, Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is up in arms. He told Marca, a Madrid based newspaper: “It’s a disgrace. A f*cking disgrace. When Drogba got sent off I didn’t get surprised. Because it is [a disgrace].

Please don’t call me arrogant, but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one. Me, and more importantly I, don’t deserve this kind of treatment. If I’m hated in Barcelona, it is their problem not mine.”

This is Mourinho’s first final with Madrid and Barca based newspaper Sport claims Mourinho is just running scared and cannot handle the pressure of such a big occasion.

But Mourinho refutes this claim: “Fear is not a word a word in my football dictionary.

I am prepared. The more pressure there is, the stronger I am. In Portugal, we say the bigger the ship, the stronger the storm. Fortunately for me, I have always been in big ships. FC Porto was a very big ship in Portugal, Chelsea was also a big ship in England and Inter was a great ship in Italy.

“I don’t care that “Barca” can also be translated into “ship”. I’m at Real Madrid, which is considered the biggest ship on the planet”.

The training session was moved to Petit Camp, a small pitch near the famous Gran Teatre de Liceu opera house  in Barcelona.

“It was not the ideal situation, but the players took it with much grace, as expected from players of Real Madrid. The guys here are willing to do anything for the team and that’s what makes me happy.”

Real Madrid play Barcelona on April 19 for the Copa del Rey title.

I could not find news of this anywhere. But it reminds me of the when Cinton left the office and the Bush crew found a bunch of missing keys from the keyborads.

Kari, You missed the rest of the story. While Pique was cutting down the nets Dani Alves was busy replacing Thong Boy’s hair gel with a ripe canister of doggy doo.
Consistent with Mourinho’s on field tactical creativity, he had Pepe short sheet Messi and Xavi’s beds. Things might get ugly…

DUBAI, April 19 (Reuters) – Dubai’s Royal Emirates Group is set to announce the purchase of a Spanish soccer club on Thursday, the company said without revealing the identity of its target.
Really? Because you saw how well that went for Málaga? Oh my.

      April 19, 2011

According to the ESPN article on the same subject, the buyers want to rename whatever mystery club they’ve purchased to “_____ Team Dubai” haha.

Could you imagine that? ie. “Real Zaragoza Team Dubai”

It’s an idea rooted in such poor taste.

An interesting tidbit from a Fabregas interview:

On why some stars of Barca’s youth team – like Fabregas, Gerard Pique, and recent Arsenal signing Jon Toral – leave the club that nurtured them…

Not sure what your take is on this, Kxevin. I think it’s a pretty honest assessment from his point of view. It must be difficult for those in the second team to rationalise why some make it or some don’t. Busi, when first promoted, made loads of mistakes. Do you think from this and his other recent comments he is starting to reconcile himself to not getting a move this summer?

    • April 19, 2011

I think that he’s watched Thiago and realized that Thiago is another of the super-priveleged, with immense potential that Guardiola wants to see what happens. I loved the honesty here from Fabregas, and it does indeed sound like he’s resigned (if that’s the correct word choice) to staying at Arsenal.

Guardiola seems to run a meritocracy, and in terms of promotions, he hasn’t been wrong yet.

I also like Fabregas, however indirectly, puts himself and Toral in the same boat, the folks who might not have made it had they stayed at the club. Sometimes you leave and get better enough, and other times you don’t. The full interview, frankly, had a tone of his time away from the club being like an extended development, before he returns.

      April 19, 2011

Just to forestall any misinterpretation of the word “privileged”, I’m sure he means this as a compliment on the hard work and dedication that put Busi and Pedro in the position to be promoted. Also that their particular talents happened to be needed at just the right time.

      Also, source?

so, will RM attack this match or will they sit back again? im thinking they will play catenaccio again. but i also think we will be going a bit more for the jugular and trying to blitz them early to get a goal, so they will need to open up. god forbid they get the first goal.

This reminds me of when I was playing foosball with my boys from a band in Italy- guys could hardly speak any English- and yelling out “catenaccio!” every time they blocked one of my shots. Inter fans at the time Mourinho was there, pfft.

I’ve wanted to start commenting and stop lurking for a while, but lurking has been entirely too much fun and while I’m very extroverted offline I’ve felt somewhat… shy? on this blog?

That aside, I found a King’s Cup advertisement that I thought was very cute and wanted to share it with anyone who hasn’t seen it:

    • April 19, 2011

I remember you from the LiveBlog! 😀

Funny because I’m the opposite in RL (friends don’t agree though)

I remember you! From! The LiveBlog. And all the posts you write. And all the comments you make.

They disagree how? They claim you’re extroverted offline?

        • April 19, 2011

Not so much extroverted as “enthusiastic”, but I think I’m much more reserved (and I think we all agree I’m very much an introvert). I think it depends on interests. Maybe if I actually found someone who I could talk football with, I’d be more animated, but all I hear is the NHL playoffs 🙁

            April 19, 2011

Ah. I’m both extroverted AND enthusiastic. International soccer is something I’ve always liked because of my father (I’m a USA citizen, parents are both immigrants, father is Turkish [mother is Taiwanese]) but professional soccer is something I’ve only followed since May 2010. I have few offline friends who care about soccer, but I’ve been evangelical about FC Barcelona in particular, and there are about 6 friends who watch games with me semi-consistently, though part of it I suspect is to humor me… FOR NOW. They will inevitably adore Messi & co as I do. It is impossible not to!

Ok, I am tired of all these spanish/catalan(?) interviews that I cant read. Would anyone be able to direct me to a website that can successfully teach me the language?

I would love to be a Pakistani, living in Canada who supports a team in Barcelona AND speaks catalan(again i dont know if this is the right language)!

    • April 19, 2011

Catalan is the language spoken in Barcelona (and Catalunya), but most sites (i.e. Sport, AS, Marca, MD etc.) are in Spanish (also called Castillan). I don’t have to link to the site right now, but SoMa4 has this online language site.

@K_Legit: I’d rather learn a language than just translate it through google.
