Let’s Finish the Job: Villarreal-Barca Liveblog

I wonder if he did a victory lap around the Bernabeu....

It’s not a belated April Fool’s joke: Sporting Heehon–I’ve always loved them and their fans y’know—have just beat the Evil Empire at home. If our boys are half as pumped as I am, we’ll have a great chance of getting all three points.

Let’s go Mortal Kombat on those submarines and FINISH THEM. *BEASTLY ROAR*

Official Barcelona line-up [via @barcastuff]: Valdes – Alves Pique Busquets Adriano – Keita Mascherano Thiago – Iniesta Villa Afellay

OMG. That is all.

Makes sense having Messi on the bench. We’ll get a chance to have a good look at Thiago and Afellay, at least. Folks have been saying Ibi played well for the NT last week. I have to say I’m worried about the midfield if we aren’t even playing Iniesta in the middle.

Hopefully the adrenalin from the Madrid game will carry us through.

Really hope Afellay puts in a better performance than he did at Gijon, cause those were some useless 45 minutes. Too bad Bojan didn’t get another start, he’s been picking up his form recently :/

      April 2, 2011

In the first half against Gijon almost every single Barca player played below par, so I think your critism is a bit harsh.
At least we got a point from that match, a thing EE aparently wasn’t able to 😉
Bojan has upped his game, with some lucky goals I may add.
I can see Keita nod in a Abi cross today, that would be nice, since he had that first goal against Zaragoza disallowed.

I said it before, but I’ll say it again: if Preciado wants to take one of our young boys on loan or on a sale-with-buyback option, I would seriously consider it.

With the way Botia has progressed it would be good for the kid, and after today Preciado has shot way up in my book.

Now I have to wait until the game gets uploaded. Booo

    From Barcastuff:

Barca finished the game with 8 guys from the cantera. Surely not as good a game a the first one but I do not care. We started with half our team (Puyi, Abi, Xavi,Mess, Pedro) missing and we have the 3 points in the bag. Ronaldo said we would loose points in Mestalla, Sevilla and Madrigal, but we got 7 from 9 points. So in your face thong boy.

Great result against a good team.

MOTM for me undoubtedly VV. Liked Thiago first half. For the first time I saw what he might be able to offer but he disappeared second half. Iniesta strolled through that game just oiling the wheels as they needed it without pushing himself. Awesome. I’m still not seeing it with Afellay but some good effort and he will get better. Also not impressed by Dani’s use of the ball offensively. No wonder we’re bottom of the league for scoring from crosses – well that, and the absolute absence of any height whatsoever !

. Our defence still doesn’t look right to me. Hurry back, Puyol.

    • Jnice
      April 2, 2011

Thiago faded in the 2nd half, but he played Dani several great balls that put him in good positions. Plus he recovered his fair share of balls in the 2nd half.

Thought Iniesta was below par in the 1st half, but 2nd half, when he returned into his rightful position, he looked great.

Our D looked shaky at times, especially for those Rossi chances, but I thought that after Pep switched Pique and Busi around, we looked better.

  37. Jose
    April 2, 2011

As long as we don’t lose to Almeria, we have effectively taken the air out of el Clasico (competitively, not morbo-ically). This is great news, as a win at the Bernabeu will sign, seal and deliver the league.

That will be pivotal toward our CdR and moreover the UCL run. Being able to take it easy in the league two years ago was pivotal to defeating ManU, and perhaps if Pellegrini hadn’t taken us to the last match day, we could have gotten a better result in the UCL semifinals.

    • mega_tajh
      April 2, 2011

The funny thing is I read somewhere that if Mou doesn’t win all the remaining liga games then he would’ve delivered a worse la liga campaign than Pelle. I guess you can cut him some slack since he has them in the CDR final and quarters of UCl so far but still lol.

  38. Jose
    April 2, 2011

If I may be allowed a bit of snark, I’m glad Mou’s record has been broken, but I didn’t put too much weight in it. All it took was him finally coaching in a competitive league, as opposed to the EPL, Serie A, and the Portuguese Liga.

    April 2, 2011

Definitely not our finest game, but we played decently against a very good side at their house. Busi showed why he should play DM instead of CB, Masch is THE MAN, Afellay was very good, and Captain Valdes rules the world. Villa was invisible, unfortunately, and Alves is really missing Pedro. Thiago rocks my world.

  41. xavi
    April 2, 2011

Regarding Afellay I felt he actually had a fine game, it was Villa’s poor display that all those crosses went waste. I’m quite sure Messi would have done a lot better than Villa did about those.

Also he did seem one dimensional some times but I think it’s because of either orders from Pep to hug the touchline(because we were already pretty stacked up in midfield with Iniesta keep getting into centre) or Afellay lacking confidence to take more risks, of losing the ball, trying to cut in and involve more in the play. I think it’s probably the former because Adriano had a beastly game and it’s mainly down to Afellay keeping the width intack on the left side… I’d like some body to clarify me on this observation 🙂

Thiago had a mix of a game… His passes had been downright brilliant most of the times but he also seemed to reckless on the ball most of the times for my liking.

As I already said Villa had a piss poor game IMO

Valdes, Busquets & Pique my MotM in that order. Masch also had been superb

    Ah, great day, sports-wise.

    – I didn’t follow, but I opened the internet to see Milan beat Inter 3-0. I kinda dislike both sides (Milan only this year though, I’ve traditionally liked Milan, but they seem messy and have Ibra this season).

    – GIJON of all sides destroy Mourinho’s home record. After the oh-so-strong leagues of England and Italy couldn’t manage it in five years, a relative minnow in Spain do so. Ha. Isn’t it amusing how Mourinho had a much harder time here than in Italy or Spain, from the 5-0 to not winning a title for the first time to losing his home record?

    – On the record, I love Gijon. Great spirit, great fans. When they were losing 7-0 to Madrid about two or three seasons ago their fans were still singing and making noise. Preciado is also awesome. Karma is a bitch huh? It is so deliciously ironic that Preciado is the one to beat his record, isn’t it? This must be the ultimate way to get one up on Mourinho in the books after his criticism.

    – I think Bassam will point out this as an example of how Mourinho’s confrontational attitude is costing Madrid. I would have to agree with him.

    – We win at Villareal. Thiago plays, Afellay plays, Messi gets some rest, Xavi does get rest, enforced or not.

    – Nobody seems to have mentioned this yet, but Valdes and Busquets get their yellow cards too, meaning no Clasico suspensions. Alves has already served a five-yellow suspension before right? So he is safe as well. Especially in a good mood about this.

    – This lack of pressure and gradual departure from the ides of February should mean we pick up form soon! Along with how our training is designed to peak at November and APRIL, this being April.

    – Valencia, my second favorite side as in my favorite ‘side I don’t really follow every weekend’, also won.

    – My prediction upon opening the Man Utd game at 55 minutes and seeing them down 2-0 (ha, they will win this, just watch and see) did come true. Not unhappy about this per se, but it made the EPL less competitive in tandem with the results of Arsenal and Chelsea so LOL.

    – I wasn’t following the CWC at all pretty much lately though I did watch a lot of the group matches back then cos my grandfather was watching all the matches and I watched a lot of them at the time too. But then I kinda preferred India to Lanka for the final, though I don’t really feel much either side.
