Let’s Finish the Job: Villarreal-Barca Liveblog

I wonder if he did a victory lap around the Bernabeu....

It’s not a belated April Fool’s joke: Sporting Heehon–I’ve always loved them and their fans y’know—have just beat the Evil Empire at home. If our boys are half as pumped as I am, we’ll have a great chance of getting all three points.

Let’s go Mortal Kombat on those submarines and FINISH THEM. *BEASTLY ROAR*

Official Barcelona line-up [via @barcastuff]: Valdes – Alves Pique Busquets Adriano – Keita Mascherano Thiago – Iniesta Villa Afellay

OMG. That is all.

  1. This just in: Manuel Preciado is a boss.

Pissing off Mourinho? Beating them at home? All in a day’s work, hombre.

  2. Barcelona line-up (unofficial): Valdes – Alves Pique Busquets Adriano – Keita Mascherano Thiago – Iniesta Villa Afellay #fcblive [cat radio]

  3. Official lineup?? Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Busquets, Adriano, Thiago, Mascherano, Keita, Iniesta, Villa and Afellay according to sport.

    1. Yup confirmed. I wonder if the Madrid result has influenced pep’s selection??

  4. I hope Affelay comes through, and Pep does not have to substitute him at half time.

    1. Me too. But I don’t know about dictating the pace, He may be a playmaker but not the Xavi type we’ll need.

  5. Makes sense having Messi on the bench. We’ll get a chance to have a good look at Thiago and Afellay, at least. Folks have been saying Ibi played well for the NT last week. I have to say I’m worried about the midfield if we aren’t even playing Iniesta in the middle.

Hopefully the adrenalin from the Madrid game will carry us through.

  6. Arsenal Draw !

Can this day get any better ?

Yes it can, Bojan and Thiago scoring and us winning 7-2 at Madrigal.

  7. I think we’re gonna win this one.
Masch + Busi + Keita = good defense.

Thiago + Afellay = direct offense.

  8. I’m getting this baby rolling 15 minutes early, so at whatevertimeitis:45; that’s 3:45pm EST for me.

    Come one, come all!

  9. Bommel is the shiiat! Has been for quite some time.
Are they prosponing the match ? Tought match-time was half an hour ago..

  10. I’m in a cabbin, deep in the forest of Norway on the border to Russia. ISDN B-line. Tried 150kbit stream, but with no luck. The stream freezes every four or five seconds. Any radio stream for this match ? I know fcbarcelona.com use to run a radio service with Nick Something but wasn’t able to find it today. Any suggestions ?

  11. Afellay starting? hmm I’m not sure about this, but good luck to him. Reaaaly excited about Thiago however!

  12. Really hope Afellay puts in a better performance than he did at Gijon, cause those were some useless 45 minutes. Too bad Bojan didn’t get another start, he’s been picking up his form recently :/

    1. In the first half against Gijon almost every single Barca player played below par, so I think your critism is a bit harsh.
At least we got a point from that match, a thing EE aparently wasn’t able to 😉
Bojan has upped his game, with some lucky goals I may add.
I can see Keita nod in a Abi cross today, that would be nice, since he had that first goal against Zaragoza disallowed.

  13. the first half of this match showed which should be our priority in the summer transfer?yes a genuine forward.

  14. We won!

Mascherano MOTM! What an amazing match he played.

Thiago was very good (despite many lost balls), while Afellay wasn’t as good.

  15. I said it before, but I’ll say it again: if Preciado wants to take one of our young boys on loan or on a sale-with-buyback option, I would seriously consider it.

With the way Botia has progressed it would be good for the kid, and after today Preciado has shot way up in my book.

Now I have to wait until the game gets uploaded. Booo

  16. Ahh decent day…

    EE lose.

    Barca open 8 point lead.

Thiago played like a Boss and Pique scored.

    I end liveblog 8)

    1. Hee, I saw the comment and debated whether I should just ruin it…then I thought that today was such a good day, I might as well be a Good Samaritan 😉

  17. “we saw the wonderful signs around the stadium for eric abidal. i saw a wonderful, wonderful video on a blog called ‘barcelona football blog’ & it showed eric abidal coming to practice, i think it was the day after, i think it was april 1st or april 2nd. i thought it was an april fool’s joke.”

    1. rayray’s quote continued…

“i thought it was an april fool’s joke at first but he looked absolutely wonderful. he was there for practice. all the players around. he looked absolutely wonderful…and ready to play. he really looked that good. he looked as if he could pull on the shirt, eric, & play for barcelona here today. he looked so well, phil, & so bright eyed & he was joking around with the barcelona players and that was absolutely wonderful to see.”

      “& blitzen is teh awesome.”

  18. Huge victory. We might well have an 8pt lead over Real Madrid by the time of the first Clasico, which would be particularly sweet.

    1. I am actually expecting madrid to drop more points when they visit Athletic Bilbao next match day…especially since they play an intense match against Spurs on Tuesday.

    2. Spot on. We’re almost done with our tricky matches and theirs have just begun. It’s gonna be a tough couple of weeks at the capital.

  19. From Barcastuff:

Barca finished the game with 8 guys from the cantera. Surely not as good a game a the first one but I do not care. We started with half our team (Puyi, Abi, Xavi,Mess, Pedro) missing and we have the 3 points in the bag. Ronaldo said we would loose points in Mestalla, Sevilla and Madrigal, but we got 7 from 9 points. So in your face thong boy.

  20. Today, I love you all 😀

I love Preciado, I even love Mourinho and Crynaldo, because this day was simply absolutely unbelievable amazing!!! 😀

  21. Great result against a good team.

MOTM for me undoubtedly VV. Liked Thiago first half. For the first time I saw what he might be able to offer but he disappeared second half. Iniesta strolled through that game just oiling the wheels as they needed it without pushing himself. Awesome. I’m still not seeing it with Afellay but some good effort and he will get better. Also not impressed by Dani’s use of the ball offensively. No wonder we’re bottom of the league for scoring from crosses – well that, and the absolute absence of any height whatsoever !

. Our defence still doesn’t look right to me. Hurry back, Puyol.

    1. Thiago faded in the 2nd half, but he played Dani several great balls that put him in good positions. Plus he recovered his fair share of balls in the 2nd half.

Thought Iniesta was below par in the 1st half, but 2nd half, when he returned into his rightful position, he looked great.

Our D looked shaky at times, especially for those Rossi chances, but I thought that after Pep switched Pique and Busi around, we looked better.

  22. As long as we don’t lose to Almeria, we have effectively taken the air out of el Clasico (competitively, not morbo-ically). This is great news, as a win at the Bernabeu will sign, seal and deliver the league.

That will be pivotal toward our CdR and moreover the UCL run. Being able to take it easy in the league two years ago was pivotal to defeating ManU, and perhaps if Pellegrini hadn’t taken us to the last match day, we could have gotten a better result in the UCL semifinals.

    1. The funny thing is I read somewhere that if Mou doesn’t win all the remaining liga games then he would’ve delivered a worse la liga campaign than Pelle. I guess you can cut him some slack since he has them in the CDR final and quarters of UCl so far but still lol.

  23. If I may be allowed a bit of snark, I’m glad Mou’s record has been broken, but I didn’t put too much weight in it. All it took was him finally coaching in a competitive league, as opposed to the EPL, Serie A, and the Portuguese Liga.

    1. That also makes me so happy because we won’t be hearing the “Mou never loses at home” song anymore.

  24. I’m sure CRonaldo will never try to predict anything concerning us ever again, he’s just crap at it.

  25. Definitely not our finest game, but we played decently against a very good side at their house. Busi showed why he should play DM instead of CB, Masch is THE MAN, Afellay was very good, and Captain Valdes rules the world. Villa was invisible, unfortunately, and Alves is really missing Pedro. Thiago rocks my world.

  26. Regarding Afellay I felt he actually had a fine game, it was Villa’s poor display that all those crosses went waste. I’m quite sure Messi would have done a lot better than Villa did about those.

Also he did seem one dimensional some times but I think it’s because of either orders from Pep to hug the touchline(because we were already pretty stacked up in midfield with Iniesta keep getting into centre) or Afellay lacking confidence to take more risks, of losing the ball, trying to cut in and involve more in the play. I think it’s probably the former because Adriano had a beastly game and it’s mainly down to Afellay keeping the width intack on the left side… I’d like some body to clarify me on this observation 🙂

Thiago had a mix of a game… His passes had been downright brilliant most of the times but he also seemed to reckless on the ball most of the times for my liking.

As I already said Villa had a piss poor game IMO

Valdes, Busquets & Pique my MotM in that order. Masch also had been superb

  27. Ah, great day, sports-wise.

    – I didn’t follow, but I opened the internet to see Milan beat Inter 3-0. I kinda dislike both sides (Milan only this year though, I’ve traditionally liked Milan, but they seem messy and have Ibra this season).

    – GIJON of all sides destroy Mourinho’s home record. After the oh-so-strong leagues of England and Italy couldn’t manage it in five years, a relative minnow in Spain do so. Ha. Isn’t it amusing how Mourinho had a much harder time here than in Italy or Spain, from the 5-0 to not winning a title for the first time to losing his home record?

    – On the record, I love Gijon. Great spirit, great fans. When they were losing 7-0 to Madrid about two or three seasons ago their fans were still singing and making noise. Preciado is also awesome. Karma is a bitch huh? It is so deliciously ironic that Preciado is the one to beat his record, isn’t it? This must be the ultimate way to get one up on Mourinho in the books after his criticism.

    – I think Bassam will point out this as an example of how Mourinho’s confrontational attitude is costing Madrid. I would have to agree with him.

    – We win at Villareal. Thiago plays, Afellay plays, Messi gets some rest, Xavi does get rest, enforced or not.

    – Nobody seems to have mentioned this yet, but Valdes and Busquets get their yellow cards too, meaning no Clasico suspensions. Alves has already served a five-yellow suspension before right? So he is safe as well. Especially in a good mood about this.

    – This lack of pressure and gradual departure from the ides of February should mean we pick up form soon! Along with how our training is designed to peak at November and APRIL, this being April.

    – Valencia, my second favorite side as in my favorite ‘side I don’t really follow every weekend’, also won.

    – My prediction upon opening the Man Utd game at 55 minutes and seeing them down 2-0 (ha, they will win this, just watch and see) did come true. Not unhappy about this per se, but it made the EPL less competitive in tandem with the results of Arsenal and Chelsea so LOL.

    – I wasn’t following the CWC at all pretty much lately though I did watch a lot of the group matches back then cos my grandfather was watching all the matches and I watched a lot of them at the time too. But then I kinda preferred India to Lanka for the final, though I don’t really feel much either side.
