I’ll Sue You: The Streisand Effect and Barça
Yet Another International LiveBlog
Just your neighbourhood Barca fanatic
Today’s a good day to be a Barca and Liverpool fan. Villa remembered how to score (please let’s hope he doesn’t forget when la Liga starts up again) Xavi’s 100th game with the NT was a win, and oh, yeah, Torres didn’t score. Woot. (I never claimed not to be petty.)
Most importantly, Torres did not even look like he could score…
But I can feel you, don’t like Torres either since his Chelsea move.
Yeah, the transfer’s been a disaster for him, PR-wise. (It’d be better if he’d been scoring, but nope.)
His current form’s Chelsea’s problem now though, not mine.
Well, to be fair, he did have some decent moves out there. One pass to Cazorla who could have scored was easy, but still good, and he also had another move where he got himself in a great shooting position, but for some reason he hesitated. But boy does Villa play better when there’s a big striker alongside him! It’s been that way for years; I don’t know why the Walrus tries to play him up there alone!
Agree. That’s what I said at the Liveblog earlier when I wanted Torres or Llorente in – they’re needed for Villa to score and not necessarily for either T or L to score themselves. We’ve seen this at the WC.
and oh, yeah, Torres didn’t score
No need to sugar coat it, mardia. He was kind of sh*t. 😉
Hee, you said it, I didn’t! (Although Lord knows I was thinking it.)
Precisely because Villa scored and played a superior game is a clear example of how difficult it is to play Barca’s system. Villa looked confident, he walked with a swagger, he looked comfortable, he moved around freely (a la Messi), he had great ball control, he took hard, direct shots, he made nice pass, nice chips, he hesitated before taking a shot to shake off a defender … he was amazing. On Barca they are asking for an entirely different skill set, totally against what is instinctual for him. Barca Villa has to stay forward, he has to work with Messi, he has to look for give and goes to Messi, he doesn’t take shots anymore. It’s not so much a Villa problem, but a Barca requirement that is difficult to meet.
I agree with this. At Barca, I feel as if Villa is always second-guessing himself and doubting whether he’s allowed to do this or that.
These international games are tedious, especially coming right before the crucial part of the season.
Take the Czech Rep today. Dozens of fouls and only 1 shot on target. They always fell onto the grass at the easiest challenge–to waste time, obviously, but at the 55 minute? That’s absolutely ridiculous.
This is the level of the National teams? Dear me. I’d rather the international games were altogether cancelled than see a repeat of the terrible world cups I have seen in the last 8 years, where crap teams go to defend and not lose.
Dozens of fouls and only 1 shot on target. They always fell onto the grass at the easiest challenge–to waste time, obviously, but at the 55 minute?
To be fair, team do that to us all the time, especially at Camp Nou. And they did score with that one shot on target.
That being said, I agree club football > international football.
And to be doubly fair, that shot was pretty much perfect: strong, as close to the post as possible, and caused Iker-face. It doesn’t get much better than that folks!
I’m looking to get myself a(nother) phone, but I don’t want to get an iPhone (3GS or 4). I’ve heard HTC Desire is pretty good, but anyone have any suggestions?
Kinda the wrong forum but if you are going to get an Android phone you’ll want to see what are the latest phones your carrier is offering. My suggestion, if its feasible, is a Nexus S. It is a great phone, runs the latest version of Android and has a front facing camera (video chat).
Nexus S has a single core as opposed do dual core processing unit which is quickly becoming the standard. I guess you can say it is behind the curve already in that regard. To people who care about the appearance, it looks less sofisticated since the case is made out of plastic.
On the up side, it brings the pure gingerbread experience and the NFC capability. The owner stands to receive OS updates as early as possible.
The on-contract price being about the same I would probably look towards Motorola Mobility Atrix 4G and the new Galaxy from Samsung. Although they have an UI less polished than HTC’s Sense, the hardware seems more attractive and with some “personality” as opposed to HTCs who all kinda look alike.
Hmmm. I’ll try all of those out later. And HTCs really do look alike 😛
Xavi being all young and cute:
Apparently Dani Alves and David Luiz are roommates at the Brazil NT training camp. That is too much awesomeness in one place!
Chelsea did ONE thing right in January!
i dvr’d the tve version not the espn one in hd. i guess i should be happy i get spanish commentary.
Haven’t been here for a while so quick points again:
Kari, enjoyed the language rhyming alliterative stuff. Somaesque.
Well now with that monkey off his back and the confidence boost, hopefully Villa will pick up form and confidence for us now as well.
Wow, Goal.com FINALLY admits Villa has beaten Raul. I was half expecting to go to the site and see ‘Villa equals Raul’s record!’ again.
David Luiz IS awesome. I don’t know much about him except that he has been very very good for Chelsea and he has AWESOME hair, but that is still enough for me to assume that he is awesome.
I hear Iniesta was on fire in that game. Didn’t see it but that can only be a good sign. When Iniesta is on fire we are almost unstoppable, he adds a whole extra dimension to our game.
I forgot the internationals were last night actually. I intend on watching the Argentina friendly though.
Loved what I’ve seen of David Luiz at Chelsea so far. Wish he was in our team.
that plasil goal was just unstoppable.
i really liked the second half, especially since del bosque was constantly doing all that tinkering. what a great villa goal. a beautiful little stutter step to get just enough separation to let one fly. iniesta did great to find him but that was all villa. i hope this puts a spring in the andalusian’s soul patch. i’m happy for spain that they got all three points. & who else but iniesta to secure them?
pep guardiola & luis enrique don’t like it much when you talk with your mouth full:
LOL @ Dani
hahahaha! love it!
*this is my second time typing this. what happened to my comment?
it’s pretty much pep bitching about a waiter at a tapas bar that talked with his mouth full. one of pep’s pet peeves. pep was pissed he couldn’t understand him. luis enrique is in agreement with him yet he’s talking with something in his mouth, too, & you can’t make out a word he’s saying. unless you’re pep, of course. & then there’s dani still glowing from having signed his new contract.
You know it really pains me to say this because along with E.E I have Chelsea as much as I hate paying taxes. But if this kid Lucas Piazon turns out to be as good as he looks, that is one hell of a buy. As was David Luiz, but they payed a huge sum for Luiz.
When I began watching soccer, I thought of it like I do fantasy football, or Yankee baseball (buy overpriced vets, who are good, but will depreciate from day one. Now I lean toward young kids, hungry to become internationals, or play in one of Europes top leagues, and make that big pay day. When I was 18 I would have loved Man City (as they are run now), and honestly its fun to watch still. I love guys like Silva, Dezko , Aleksandar Kolarov, and most of all Adam Johnson. They have spent huge sums of money, yet my favorite, and maybe their most talented player is Adam Johnson who was only 7 million pounds. That’s why I pushed so hard for Douglas Costa about 3 years back (He signed for Shakhtar for €12m. I would much rather spend €35m on four young players who are relatively unknown and yet to prove themselves to a certain degree in Europe, than buy Cesc, Pastore or Ribery (Didn’t Munich say they wanted €70m for him last summer lol.)
I guess the perfect example (just an example, I dont want him) would be if we could have beat Bremen to the punch on Ozil and signed him from Eintracht Frankfurt for €4.3m or even if we could have hooked him pre WC for €8-10m. I know hindsight is 20/20 but we pay people a ton of $ to find the (non Masia) players like Afellay, who may turn out to be the deal of the century.
Do you think we got a shot at signing Jimmer Fredette, he’s got sick range, could probably score from 35 meters. Then we could get Ray Hudson, Dicky V and this guy (link below) calling games…(Dude goes nuts at the end of the clip. And E.E loose!!!!!)
yes, please! :] that commentator is awesome!
Ha ha ha. Fantastic commentator!
Blitzen Came up with an awesome (and challenging game a few posts back asking us to pick you best Barca starting XI, with no Messi, and only two players from the current squad. It got me thinking.
IF YOU PUT ANY 3 FORMER BARCA GREATS INTO THE CURRENT BEST XI, WHO WOULD IT BE, AND WHO WOULD YOU REPLACE?
*Must sub position for position.
**Must stay with the 4-3-3 formation
***It would be extra cool if you explained your reasoning behind your selections.
****If you wanna be extra tricky, sub one player from each line.
I guess this has to be a close to perfect lineup, with two field three field generals in Pep, Puyol and Xavi, and the most prolific front three ever seen. The flair of Ronni, the rugged pace, power and poaching ability of Ronaldo and the perfect player in Messi!!!! I could only imagine some of the one/twos we would have saw if Dino and Messi played together in their prime.
Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Cruyff. Don’t know how I can fit all of them in while still keeping Messi, but those three players. Maybe push Messi or Cruyff into attacking midfield and Xavi into Pep’s position? Dunno..
When you said that you hate paying taxes, it sounded so typical American.
And it reminded me of this tv series with that kid Fred Savage ( who only made one notable appearance after that, in Austin Powers). Wonder Years. His dad always came home and complained about paying taxes.
Are the taxes that high in US?
No, they aren’t. But Americans seem to view paying taxes as just one step away from socialism.
Oooooh good one!
Alves – Puyol – Pique – Abidal
Laudrup – Xavi – Iniesta
Cruyff – Messi – Ronaldinho
Pep stays as coach. Xavi drops back to DM.
I don’t know why nobody has mentioned this so far, but Soccernet reports Abidal could be training again in four weeks?
Also, Bojan being inspired by Benzema!
the Abidal thing was mentioned 2 posts back.
Pep for busi.simply put busi is still in his growing stage while pep is the master.
Cruyff for pedro.one is a all time great,on the other side there is p!.no comparison.
Ronnie for villa.to simply put the bucket toothed samba king is pure awesome.
When dani scored against madrid B did anybody noticed peps reaction?nothing, absolutely nothing.pretty weird.
off-topic: Can someone explain to me what it means to walk with a swagger or to have got swagger ? Thanks!
It’s like, walking where you look and give off the vibe of being completely confident, even overconfident. Swagger is sort of like a vibe of complete confidence, or overconfidence. Is how I can best think of how to explain it.
i just read through the live blog comments & to answer your question about international caps, xavi had to dance around a giant sombrero a couple of times after the game on the tve feed. & what’s this about a barca b article? what time does the youngins’ match kick off tomorrow/today, anyway?
3 pm Eastern time.
has anybody watched DEXTER? That is a unique TV series.i found it quite interesting
It’s very good. That opening sequence is genius.
into the 2nd season.
The ending of the 1st season is quite interesting.
I like the theme music a lot
Dexter is the truth.
the fourth season is pretty good, too.
i need to watch more tv. i’m just now finally watching the wire! yeah, i know. i’ve been up on game i’m just finally sitting down & watching it from the beginning.
Loved your older article Kari! 😀
On the issue of noticing Coentrao, I think before Abi went out/switched to the CB position well no one was thinking of getting an LB seriously. but when the position opened up, we had one place to get someone who could be the best in the world and hopefully a little different from his predecessor/ give a new tactical element for opponents to handle. Euler’s timing and argument hit all those point, thus generated discussion. We’ve seen two attacking FB’s can work, stretch the oppn. defense heavily though one of them should be a little more conservative.

I’m off to see the wizard…um… off to see the little magician at least!
Getting ready to drive to US v. Messi.
Go USA!(and Messi/Masche/Milito)
Prediction: 4-3 Donovan(2) Dempsey (2)- Messi (3) (because I’m particularly patriotic, not because I’m a realist).
Well, that would be an awesome match with lots of goals and action.
I’d rather predict a 1-1 or 2-1 for either side, though.
Take some pictures please and share them with us later 😉
Have fun!!! Wish i was going too. Take lots of photos!
Dont let OLEGUER name your children,my worst defender ever in barca
There are many others that were bad.
can anybody tell me when the argie match is going to start in GMT ?
I believe it starts at 11 pm GMT
After his goal, You still think 9 Afellays is a bad idea ?
@Jnice (or anyone following the B team)
Should I judge Bartra on his performance against France ? or Should I wait to see him against Belarus ?
(p.s) : France’s U21 GK is Hilarious 😀
Well, I don’t think Bartra is part of the squad playing Belarus. I think the CBs for that match will be Botia and Victor Ruiz. I didn’t see the whole match, though I saw France’s first goal. He was caught out a little bit, but he shouldn’t take all the blame for that. I don’t know how he did in the second half.
But you should probably judge him by his performances week in, week out for Barça B. He’s been pretty good this year.
Anyone watching Wales/England? They are booing Terry every time he touches the ball. 😛
clumsy challenge. it was the right call. is there anything else on? 🙂
i would love me some horrible little hobgoblin but that’s not being shown on my tv. 🙁
Ugh, 2-0 now. Poor Wales.
You don’t have ESPN 2, Miguel?
i do. i was talking bout the armenia russia game that blitzen has yet to provide me a link to.
Lazy *ss! Must I do everything for you?
found another one that works.
Oh, I’m an idiot.
Too bad Bale isn’t playing.
I used to support England marginally (they, being my other “underdog” team with Spain). It was massively entertaining and tragic watching them mess up in the international stage. I never get tired of watching them insist on playing Gerrard and Lampard together to dire results, etc. Despite hating Chelsea, I try to be neutral with the Chelsea players during internationals. But Terry. I have come to really hate the guy.
seriously. bench lampard already. to be fair, people said xavi & iniesta couldn’t play together on the same team, either. how’d that work out? i really like what wilshere brings to the table for england. i hope he stays healthy.
I like Wilshere too 😀
Here is a lovely compilation of Michael Laudrup skills, with requisite emo soundtrack:
u have time to watch DEXTER!i thought u r a footy freak.
Anyway i m now split between SPARTACUS and ROME.which one should i watch
I watch a lot of stuff (on my computer). I don’t watch that much football.
I haven’t seen either, but people seem to love Spartacus.
poor ramsey. first he’s the victim of a horrible tackle that sidelines him for , what, a year? secondly & subsequently wilshere goes one ring above the welshman on the arsenal totem pole. & now wilshere’s england is handing his ass to him. sucks.
Watch this, please. It’s funny enough as it is, but watch Busquets as he runs up to Baros.
how did i miss that? that’s hilarious! was busi pointing towards the direction of the ball, trying to help old man baros out? what a d*ck. 🙂
Ha, gotta love Busquets.
iniesta’s awesomeness vs the czech republic. accompanied by obligatory techn track:
At the very end of this, you can see someone go down on the left hand side of the image- I think it’s Busquets, but it’s too blurry and too fast for me to be able to tell. I also saw him on the ground after the match when I watched it yesterday- there haven’t been any reported injuries, have there? It may well be nothing.
It was Busquets. He was just tired, nothing more than that.
Oh, that’s good to hear (not that he was so tired, but that no one was injured). Thanks Jnice.
this is the closest i’ll ever get to being at the camp nou. how sad:
Wow Amazing Miguel!!!! Certainly a must keep bookmark!!!!
The front cover of Sport claims that Puyol won’t be fit to play the Villareal match.
If that’s the case, what do you guys expect our starting XI to be, specifically the CB pairing?
I have to admit I’m getting increasingly concerned over the nature of his injury. April isn’t far off, and what if god forbid we have to navigate CL ties and the Clasicos with just Pique, Milito, and Fontas as our natural CBs?
I guess I would be comfortable with Busquets pairing up with Pique in the back, and Mascherano occupying the DM role, but it’s not an ideal situation.
If Pedro is fit, he might start ahead of Bojan (that’s who I’d go with) and I guess Maxwell has a shot too, if he’s fit.
No Milito for me.
I’d choose that line-up too, but I think Pep will play Milito.
Apparently Deulofeu is killin’ it for Spain U-17s right now.
His name is literally “God made him”. Of course he’s going to be a boss. 😀
Yes! I wake up just in time for the Barca B game! 😀
Another one here: http://www.mips.tv/player/embedplayer.php?id=46829&e=1&width=750&height=480
Thought we would have absences, but I guess not.
Lineup: Oier – Montoya Armando Fontas Muniesa – EduOriol Thiago DosSantos – Benja Soriano Nolito
Barcelona B line-up: Oier – Montoya Armando Fontas Muniesa – EduOriol Thiago DosSantos – Benja Soriano Nolito
Hey Miguel, how would you like to join my Dream Team currently consisting of Jnice and blitzen?
i would be honored. 🙂 although, honestly, i just regurgitate everything jnice says & claim it as my own. 😉
Germany already scored!
GOLLLLL!!! Jonathan Soriano!!
Thiago. Can’t wait till he joins the first team. He’s too nice.
Geez, Soriano is really ON right now!
Great goal. Nice pass by Thiago, clinical finish by Soriano. 1-0.
klose! & soriano! barca b’s was mutch better. thiago turning up the heat.
where’s fontas playing?
CB. He looks like a paler, less awkward Pique 🙂
He’s actually playing DM. Armando and Muniesa are the CBs, Edu Oriol is playing left back.
yeah, he’s doing a good job.
Really? I see Muniesa as the LB…?
He is dropping back between the two CBs like Busi does when Edu Oriol bombs up.
Ahh, I see it now. But Muniesa is way too small and tiny to play CB 😛
Alcorcon hardly getting a sniff of the ball. 🙂
weak ass yellow card. jonathan has to be careful.
Our B-team is nice! The whole team is playing quite well so far.
Montoya, Armando, Edu Oriol have impressed me (as players I had no expectations from).
Balls from the back have been nice.
BS yellow for JDS. Ref being unnecessarily strict (only 5 fouls the whole game). But on the subject of JDS, he’s been quite inconsistent of late, huh? What’s the deal with him?
JDS has been much better in the second half of the season.
for whatever reason jds has been playing well recently. he’s been getting a lot more minutes under luis enrique. didn’t he score a brace a couple of weeks ago or something?
Oh, that’s great! The last couple of Barca B matches I saw, he either didn’t play or was, well, horrible. Nice to see him picking up form 🙂
The team has looked much better with Fontas at DM than Ilie. They’ve had to readjust quite a bit with their midfield injuries and it sucks Romeu got hurt. I love the Fontas, Thiago, JDS midfield, though.
How did Alcorcon not score?
Why is Armando wearing the armband when Fontas is playing? I don’t like that.
I’m not 100% certain, but I think it’s because Fontas has been promoted to the 1st team. Enrique probably made the change once it was official and this is one of the rare times Fontas will get to play with the B team for the rest of the season.
muniesa’s ankles getting broken. that should have been a goal for alcorcon.
another goal from a freekick for germany. ozil to muller. poor kazakhstan.
I’m liking Oier. Nice confidence in the air and a good commanding of his area.
LOL, ref gets decked by an Alcorcon player
