  1. Guardiola : “Before we scored 4 or 5 goals in such games, now we don’t. It’ll come back at the end of the season.”

Pep said something like this at the beginning of the season,
“we’ll reach our peak performance on November”
    and they did…

who knows Pep will right again this time…

    1. Well this time it’s more of the injuries getting in the way than poor performance (tho I don’t deny the latter as for last night’s game) so now here’s to hoping we get all possible injured players back on the pitch for April when we ought to peak. 🙂

  2. i’m feeling sicky poo. & that’s amplified by jnice telling me it’ll be 14 days til barca’s next match. boo! atleast i’ll have a burfdays before then.

i was happy with the match. villa could’ve been better but they were playing getafe. so they took it down a gear? whatever. they knew they had the international break ahead of them & a tough match versus villarreal coming up. i’m just happy jeffren didn’t get hurt. 🙂

    1. Hope you feel better soon and Happy “burfday” in advance.

All in all I’m happy with today. After the week we had, a worse result would not have surprised me. The finishing was sad. Messi was out there playing Santa Claus, gifting perfect passes to people who didn’t take advantage of them. sMashe was awesome. Don’t remember too much of Iniesta but I haven’t rewatched the game.
As for CB, please come back soon, Captain.
Xavi, Dude, that’s two stupid yellows in two games, what’s going on?
Wish list for Villareal (assuming the captain and P!! are back):
Alves, Pique, Puyi(please be back!), Adriano
      Masche, Businiesta
Busi and Masche are going to have to figure out that card situation soon. There’s only Almeria between Villareal and the clasico!

    2. Am I the only one who thinks that, despite the goal, Milito did pretty well for someone who hasn’t played in a while? Certainly no worse than Pique.

    3. I didn’t think he was a disaster as has been suggested and I do think he would improve with games. At his age you need regular minutes to keep your sharpness. In his favour is that he is a natural defender. However, without Puyol I just feel the shape of our defence has gone to pot. I mentioned elsewhere that of the defence last night I don’t think that either Alves or Adriano are natural defenders, Milito has looked shaky and Pique isn’t in the form of his life but much of that may be down to having to get used to a new partner every game. To play a high line you need to have an experienced back four. I’m also going to throw in that since Adriano replaced Maxwell we’ve lost a bit of solidity and started giving up too many chances.

    4. I don’t think Gabi was a disaster, but he wasn’t good. In the first half, he takes a loose touch in our box that led to a Getafe attacker getting a shot off. Luckily for us, the shot was wide.

Second half, he came out way too far multiple times to mark the dude with the ball and was left out in no mans land. A better team would have punished him there. He presses up too tight on players, then is caught scrambling back because of his initial folly. With his lack of pace, he is never able to get back on time.

You add all of that to the part he played in Getafe’s goal and I don’t think he did well at all.

If he starts against Villarreal, I’ll go as far as to say we have no chance at winning that match.

  3. I think we need to concern ourselves with the Villareal forwards agau=inst our back line. I have no doubt that Iniesta can fill the Xavi role so no real concern in the midfield if you ask me. If I remember correctly, Nilmar and @Rossi’s pace has hurt us in the past, so it is important that we DO NOT PLAY MILITO v. the yellow submarine!!!! I like this lineup against Villareal

    Pique Puyol
    Alves Adriano

    Messi Iniesta

    Bojan Villa Pedro

  4. Sorry that didn’t come out right, here it is more legible

I would also tell busi to go ahead and grab a yellow in the villareal early in the secon half, then bring in masch to do the same in the last 20 min or so. This would mean both would be out for almeria, giving Kieta the start against the minnows a DM. ths would clear us up for Madrid.

Another option is going out on a limb and playing Affelay next to Andres, and pushing Messi up to his normal position. And I guess I am glad that Xavi will miss Villareal and not E.E

  5. @Kari:

    From Twitter-
@LaLigaLoca Some good news of a Sunday. Eduardo Inda is leaving Marca to run a crappy TV station. Or maybe life will be dull without his lunacy?

  6. How come nobody has said anything about iniestas very subdued performance esp in the first half? or is it just me?

    1. First Half- Iniesta recovered a lot of balls. He wasn’t too successful running at players, but he recovered several balls and played the attackers in early. He gave Messi the ball that led to him being 1v1 with the keeper.

Second Half- Iniesta made two great passes to Villa that should have resulted in goals, were it not for Villa’s poor finishing/decision-making. He also played a great ball over the top to Bojan/Alves… that would have resulted in a goal if the linesman made the correct call or if Dani left the ball for Bojan.

He wasn’t at his sparkling best, but I think he played a good match. On another day he would’ve had 3 assists.

  7. When I think about it- even if Puyol is fit for the Villarreal match, that’s a tough, tough match to make your comeback in. He’ll probably be off the pace for most of the match.

    1. That, or he’ll be busting to play after having been out for the past 3 months. Not sure a determined Puyol could be any worse than Milito.

What I’m worried about is whether or not his knee holds out. We need him for Shaktar. Bad.

Also, don’t forget: Villareal are not the force they were at the beginning of the season. Yes they gave us a hell of a match back in November, but back then they were steamrolling pretty much everyone but us and Madrid. And let’s not forget the role the referee played in helping them get back into the match.

Things are rather different now, with them suffering from the fatigue of challenging on several fronts. They, just like us, have a midweek game to worry about, so it’ll be interesting to see if that impacts their team selection at all.

This isn’t me suggesting that it’ll be an easy game by any means. Probably one of the toughest of the season. But the team knows what it needs to do. They know the importance of keeping that 5 point lead ahead of the Clasico, and I think they’ll go all out for the victory.

  8. 1. Ok I just checked the liveblog and was surprised at how prompt the response to Dani Alves’s goal was..I for one remember being absolutely stunned for like 10 seconds and having a sound that was either a ‘glorp’ or a ‘glerp’ escape my mouth and holding my hands on my head for a whole minute before screaming (well not screaming I guess) Golazo!!

    2. Having watched this game on the TV I have to say that it is an absolute pleasure watching Mascherano play. The man is an absolute beast. I remember that Getafe player shielding the ball on the ground with his body and Masche was still trying to get the ball like a pitbull. Great stuff!

    3. Villa’s back in funky mode after tearing it up a few weeks ago. Seems his peak fitness schedule coincides with our Hlebruary style form.

    4. CT scored..yaaayness..2 matches, 2 goals..always seems like Bojan comes good near the end of the season. he did it last season for sure, maybe he’ll do it again this season.

  9. I thought Bojan had a higher chance of scoring last night if he stayed up but he decided to do his usual stuff, which is falling at the slightest of touches. Really stupid!

How did Villa got a yellow card? Even the defender looked guilty after the 2nd foul. The ref must’ve thought that Villa dived because it was the exact same position but actually it was the exact same foul too.

Lately Villa has been trying to look for Messi more and more. In the beginning he would’ve just taken a shot if the ball is at his feet around the box area but now he always wants to look for Messi.

But in the beginning his passes were really sloppy but it has improved a lot.

Why didn’t Pep put Fontas in to give him some minutes?

Pique and sMasch needs to stop playing diagonal long balls. At least when you want to do it, don’t float it( that gives a lot of air time and the defender would definitely intercept it).

Messi was a beast in some parts of the match.

    And I dearly missed Busi!!

  10. Some matches, Villa just looks defeated. Not sure how they are coaching this guy because he seems to be trying to follow a format that includes passing to Messi – no matter how marked he is. It’s just not working out and I’m not sure it’s entirely his fault. Villa does not appear to play with instinct which means assessing each situation and choosing the better option. For example, Messi passes him the ball and Villa feels obligated to pass it back each and ever time. He’s not allowed creatively or the opportunity to take the shot. To me, when they pan back to Messi after a Villa flub Messi looks a bit pissed and Villa seems to look back at Messi, shrugging his shoulders and shaking his head. Something is not right there. To Messi’s point, I think Villa’s main issue is that his first touch is so poor that it doesn’t allow him the luxury of making a good decision because he is chasing back his ball. A vicious cycle that needs to be addressed in practice.

    1. I feel as if Villa’s natural instincts are being stifled by trying to fit in the Barca pattern of play. Which is worrying as every chance he doesn’t convert results in him losing confidence. He had such an unerring eye for goal when playing for Valencia and the Spanish NT. Now, I feel as if he has to do extra work that he didn’t do so much before [track back, press] which is all very good but he also has to take the extra second to think to pass the ball back to Messi and do the one-two’s, etc., which I suppose he didn’t do before. And every extra second he takes to think (whether to pass, shoot, dribble) makes him lose that instinct of shooting at the right time and the right place.

    2. Yes. But also because Pedro is from La Masia so he’s trained to play the Barca way and doesn’t have to “think.” It now comes naturally to him to make those passes and it’s a plus that he’s ambidextrous. I’m really very hopeful for Villa though. I think he’s good enough to be able to adapt at some point.

    3. what about bobo? i think he has the same problem. he takes that extra second to think about a shot, too, yet he knows the barca system in & out. or he should atleast.

      off topic:
you guys notice the player’s names on valencia’s kits are in japanese for the match versus sevilla, i think?

    4. that said, villa just isn’t that kind of player. he likes to run onto a pass as opposed to pedro or messi’s dribbling past people to create something. the international break should do him some good and hopefully he’ll pull his head out of his ass.

    5. Yes, agree about Bobo. I really don’t know what to say about him. I also haven’t seen a lot of him. Didn’t watch the games last season where he was on. Maybe Pedro is just so much better than him. P! stays on his feet and has shown the right attitude since being given the opportunity to play for the first team. Granting that he and Bobo are equally skilled, then Bobo must suffer from lack of confidence and mental fortitude and the weight of expectation.

My comment was really more for Villa in particular because he was consistently on target for Valencia for many years. I quiet agreed with the assessment of @justsayin. I also see him being well-positioned, onside and clear sometimes but they just don’t pass him the ball.

Anyway – I just pray that they come back better after the break.

    6. I totally agree that Pedro has a huge advantage having been brought up in the Massia. He knows what to do and how to do it, instinctively. Villa has a huge learning curve plus he’s not that young so as they say, it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. However, I too have high hopes that it gets straightened out. As many here have said, it’s so difficult to find a true 9 for our team because we really don’t play a game where we need a poaching #9. In Villa’s defense, he does make run after run trying to beat the off side trap and yet we rarely pass that ball to him. I find that puzzling. It’s like they’ve practiced that particular play, yet forget to tell Villa that they won’t be implementing it in games!
Bobo – as you call him , hmmmmm …. that one I fear there is no answer to at this time. That boy has lost it and it doesn’t seem as if he is getting it back anytime soon. He seems like a great fit, personality wise and all, but he is not man enough to play in this game. Physically, he is pushed off the ball too often and that’s an important part of his position as he has to either carry the ball long enough to score or make a pass and he can’t seem to make that happen. Personally, I would like to see Nilmar or Rossi in our front line.

  11. Who’s going to play CB vs. Villareal is debatable but even if Maxwell gets the green light, Adriano deserves to play leftback because of his recent matches..

  12. what a beautiful borja valero cross to marco ruben to put them ahead. the way the ball floated in the air and appeared right where ruben was standing was just breathtaking. and to score from that sort of play against bilbao of all people, villarreal deserves the lead.

    1. I think Kevin mentioned he was busy and wouldn’t be doing the review, so I guess Isaiah or Luke will be handling that.
