Talk about innovation: Pep Wow! What a formation.

    system: 3 4 3 – Diamond middle formation

    ———–Valdes———-

    —–sMash—Puyol—Abi—

    ————-Busi———

    —-Thiago———Xavi—-

    ———–Messi———–

    -Alves—–Fab——–Villa

    Valdes
Puyol – Unbelievable stability in the backline. Interception of free kick taken on 35:40 to clear the ball with a head. Pure beast.

sMash – Stability in the back line times 2. His long range passing from the back is a beauty to behold. Pinpoint.

Abi – His forward runs are getting much better, He is not only a rock on the left wing, but also supports attacks. His assist to Villa.

Alves – I love Alves in this role. Play him an attacking player all the time. That cross to messi where he missed the header hit the post was a beauty.

Busi – Beautiful game, kept the ball moving from D to O. At 32:30 he dived to complete a pass. Had the vision to receive a difficult pass and convert it into an attacking move. It was the end product of this move that Villa scored.

Thiao – pinching in from the right, staying on the right, supporting Alves. Did his job.

Fabregas – Wow fabregas, Dude is the no 9! No need to look further than goal no. 2 for how the class of Fabregas. Dropped back on 28 minute in to Holding midfielder role, creating a big hold in the back line. Constantly moving to the left of the midfield dragging a defender with him to open space in the field. Minute 38:00.

Villa – Providing width up front on the left. Given his background and how he has played as no. 9 for Valencia, Kudos for playing in that position. Well taken goal. Guess why villa was so productive this game. He received plenty of support from Abi.

Messi – Messi was playing behind Fab as an advanced midfielder in a diamond. The on field telepathy between Fab and Messi is one to behold. Total destabilizer.

    Note:

Villa’s runs this match were timed perfectly. I don’t think he has changed his game significantly since the last match. The was was being passed at a much quicker pace. This made Villa’s runs onside.

That was the first half summary. The game is over at this point. As far as I see the second half is a training exercise and should not count towards anybody’s game review.

If Xavi doesn’t get a 10 I’m going to buy Kxevin an even bigger TV set to make sure he can see his awesomeness 🙂

There should be a final part of the review of the Villareal game right?

THAT’s ho Barca should always play. Today there were flashes of how the ’08/’09 team played.

      September 17, 2011

You’re kidding, right? This team is better by far than the 08/09 team.

      • blaunero
        September 17, 2011

I don’t think so. The 08/09 Barca is the finest team we’ve ever had. That starting XI vs Real at the Bernabeu…

      • Ryan
        September 17, 2011

I also think this team/last season’s is better than the 08-09 crew. The 2-6 was amazing, but the 5-0 was just so dominant.

        • blaunero
          September 17, 2011

But it’s also the timing of the two results. The Manita came on 29 November at a time when we were on a roll. It decided no trophies. The chorreo was on 2 May and it was sandwiched by two extremely tough games vs Chelsea at a time when the team was tiring and under pressure. The ’09 outfit won the Treble. I can’t say I’m surprised that not many people think the same as I.

            September 17, 2011

Well, May and November are when we’re supposed to be on a roll. Fair enough about the looming Chelsea game though.

Last year’s was much better than 08/09. This year’s has the potential to be even better, But they have to prove it.

        September 17, 2011

I wouldn’t say this team is far better than the 08/09. That year was my favorite (and will probably remain thus).

I’m annoyed, but calm, by the fact we didn’t get a Double Manita..

      September 17, 2011

Messi was so wasteful infront of goal. They could have scored a last minute corner and tied 8-8.

    September 17, 2011

La Liga sucks and has no competition at all, This result will never happen in the EPL. Teams which lose by 8 goals should never play Football again and work in gas stations while being whipped and forcing them to listen to Justin Bieber Songs.

    • yana
      September 17, 2011

Totally right, in the EPL the team that scores 8 at least has the decency to let the other team score twice.

    • Whatever
      September 17, 2011

United beat Arsenal 8-2 a couple of weeks ago.

But I agree with you… Our only real competition is Madrid.

Off-topic, but is it crazy that when I go to Florence next month, I want to see a Fiorentina match just because of Dirty Tackle’s Artur Boruc’s Friday Rage Lists?

Back on topic, I will be at FCB-Sevilla. Woo!!

I’m not the only one who noticed that Thiago played deeper than Alves, right? Very good, hardworking match.

And speaking of Alves, his crosses today were on point. Nice to see.

    • Diego
      September 17, 2011

Thiago was basically RB and Alves RW.

I would say that it was a 3-1-3-3 again but Dani played where Alexis had previously as the right of the 3 forwards with Messi and Villa in the other 2. Thiago was the most disciplined of the midfield trio

loved the way how Pep quickly removed the 3 leading players: Abidal, Puyol and Xavi early..

My favourite part of the game was right after Villa’s second goal. Villa is casually walking back with Messi and Cesc when Busquests enters the camera’s shot to fix Villa’s awful hair.

I’m about to watch the second half again, but when Maxwell came on for Puyi, who played DM? Thiago? Xavi?

An orgasmic match after 2 disappointing ones. The 3-4-3 formation seems to be treating us very well at the Camp Nou, total domination and 13 goals in 2 matches.
Alves had an awesome game as a winger but since he’s our de-facto winger there’s nothing new there.
The thing that made me want Cesc was his scoring ability. I remember during our treble winning season Cesc had outscored ALL our midfielders with Arsenal.
Thank God for the Villa goals! Goals do wonders to a striker’s confidence and I hope he continues.
And we got to see Maxwell. I always forget about that guy. 😀

Just fyi, I never supported those critics talks (if there were any) after the two recent non-wins. Having said that if there was a team who could have attempted to take advantage of this “blip”, surely wasn’t Osasuna who were playing out for a draw from the 1st minute against Pathetico at the Calderon. They succeeded there and thought it was recipe for success this season.

The team was extremely effective today, check these stats out: 17 shots 14! on target and eight of those were goals. Again around 92% passing accuracy.

Any stat you could think of, Barca have dominated it. However, the best aspect of our team last night was the intensity of our play, especially the first half, we went from normal tempo control and within a bink of an eye we would string up perfect one touch passing and movement that was so quick that even if Osasuna brought on another 3 players they still would not contain our forwards.

VILLA, was a beast in the first half. You think without Pedro on the field, we lose a lot of that work rate on the wings, but Villa was like a Pedro on steroids. He was so eager to score today he never held back. None of our players held back today, even 3 or 4 nill up Alves was still fuming about missed passes and such, the players knew from minute one they were laying out a large whopper for Osasuna.

the intensity that we have in the 1st half must be maintained throughout the season. no matteer it’s still 0-0 or we 2 or 3 goals leading. i think we can do that this season because we have more depth. our bench is more capable to keep the same level of intensity, considering the quality of the whole squad. i think this season every players will hv considerable contribution. looking at how Pep “utilize” all players in every matches with different tactics. **Optimistic mode**
